There wasn’t a courthouse in Genoa 165 years ago when the Pony Express had just completed its first year riding through town with the mail from St. Louis to Sacramento.
On Wednesday, Re-Rider Arthur Johnson rode Sandy into town right on time, carrying a U.S. flag, with a long line of cars behind him.
Johnson said he has been riding in the Pony Express since 2009.
Two minutes later, the mochila was transferred to Reno resident Amy Rasmussen’s horse Penny, and they were off continuing south to Old Kingsbury Grade.
Those in attendance were a little surprised by how quickly the transfer took place, but the riders needed to get up a head of steam so they could tackle the steep ride up Old Kingsbury in order to make it to Stateline in three hours where the California contingent waited.
