Built in 1860, Fort Churchill served as a military post to safeguard early settlers, westbound emigrants, and vital communication routes. Troops stationed there protected Pony Express riders and telegraph lines, ensuring messages could travel across the West during periods of conflict. The fort also acted as a key supply depot for the Union Army during the Civil War.
